Apollo

Something feels off. Pinpointing that something is not coming easily to me. I’ve entered Crete many times. I’ve walked the labyrinth, I’ve made it through, and I’ve held an audience with Minos more times than I can count. I knew better than to question Pasi and the quantity of food she ate.

Thus far, the journey felt easy.

Too easy.

Grinding my teeth, I push back from the table, adopting a relaxed position. My ankle rests over my knee, and Vanessa eats the last of her meal beside me, while Hades puts down his fork.

They are mundane, menial tasks that occur every day.

Yet today, Crete feels off, as though it hides a secret. I can’t feel Persephone, though I know elsewhere in the Underworld, she plots her vengeance, believing the world owes her something when it owes her nothing. Her pain and anguish vibrate beneath the soil for all creatures to feel.

Perhaps that is what I’m feeling. The minotaurs have been here for quite some time, living but not truly thriving with the gates remaining closed. It’s a problem, it seems, for all the kingdoms we have come across. One I know Vanessa feels she must solve.

If I feel her unrest, then the rest of the Underworld feels her unrest. Siding with an heir is risky. They don’t always live up to the expectations of those who fall under their rule. Take Typhon, for example. He tried and failed at being king.

Many of his heirs did.

I will not allow Vanessa to fail, the consequences are far too significant this time.

“Minos,” I say when the conversation lulls. “What of your alliance with the witches?”

He instantly sneers, drawing my interest. As they stated earlier, their relationship with the witches is turbulent at best.

“They cut us off,” Minos spits out, his food spraying across his plate in his anger.

Even more intriguing.

“They’ve pulled away from any possibility of pairings.” Pasi pushes her plate away as though the conversation itself disgusts her.

Milo glances at me with apprehension that saturates the air between us. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say he was trying to warn me off of this conversation.

It’s a shame I won’t listen. “What is their reasoning?”

“They are no longer producing.” Minos slams a fork on the table, the prongs embedding into the wood.

Beside me, Vanessa stiffens and gives me a dirty glare from her peripheral. I reach out and rest a casual hand on her thigh, squeezing once in comfort.

We need the witches. I cannot see much of the future for the Underworld, only bits and pieces that don’t involve Vanessa. Unfortunately, she’s taken a liking to Milo, eliminating his future from my sight.

“Hecate?” I begin, only to have Minos grab his fork and point it at me like a sword.

I wonder what he thinks he is going to do with that.

“Closed her borders months ago.” Minos sighs with defeat, leaning back in his chair.

Again, Vanessa stiffens, and Hades glances at me over her head.

It’s a bit obvious we had something to do with that.
